FRUITS, VEGETABLES
AND WHOLE GRAINS
These are the key components of a healthy diet that is
packed with vitamins, minerals and disease preventing ingredients. Both
the
2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
and the New
Food Pyramid emphasize the importance of a plant-based diet.
5-a-day used to be the maximum, but now it is the new minimum number of
servings of fruits and vegetables for most. Along with that, experts
recommend 2-3 one-cup servings of low fat dairy and about 5 ounces of
protein (adult). Limit fats, sugars and sodium. Adults should engage in
no less than 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
Perhaps the most visual difference in the new food
pyramid is the addition of exercise. In terms of prevention and weight
loss/maintenance, exercise is emerging as and extremely important
component of the equation. |
